
Sri Lanka is a country with many things to admire. One such picturesque beauty includes local sunrises and sunsets. Here are some of our favourite sunsets and sunrises in Sri Lanka and places to chase the sun and grab that perfect Instagram worthy moment.
Adam’s Peak Sunrise
Adam’s peak also known as “Sri Pada” is one of the best known places in Sri Lanka to witness a sunrise. The season that starts in the chilly month of December and is a place of religious importance. The mountain is 7,350 feet tall and located middle of the Ratnapura and Nuwara Eliya districts in the Sabaragamuwa and Central Provinces of Sri Lanka. The climb up is hard but locals and tourist gather each year during the peak season to climb up and see the sunrise.
Arugam Bay Sunrise
The location is known as a surfer’s paradise and known to be one of the finest beaches for surfing. The place is also one of the best places to view a sunrise. Be ready to wake up in the early months of June-July if you want to not only catch some waves but also get a glimpse of a beautiful sunrise on the Eastern coast of Sri Lanka. Accommodation options are plenty and Yoho Sea Rock is a budget friendly property if you are looking to stay in a couple of nights.
Sigiriya Rock Sunset
One of the most popular tourist attractions is no doubt the Sigiriya Rock Fortress. King Kasyapa I (477 -495 CE) constructed for his new capital and palace atop the rock. The view from top of Sigiriya rock in unbelievable and the sunset is absolute perfection. Yoho Lion Road in the vicinity is a great place for those who want to work around a budget.
Parakrama Samudraya Sunset
Built by King Parakramabahu (1153-1186), Parakrama Samudraya is one of largest irrigation tanks built. Polonnaruwa is declared a UNESCO World Heritage site and visited by most locals and tourist all year round. A tour of Polonnaruwa will usually start or end with the Parakrama Samudraya. Consequently, the water body becomes one those places you visit and can catch glimpse of that picture perfect sunset. And what do you think is the best way to wrap up your Polonnaruwa adventure? Hikkaduwa Sunset
As one of the best surf beaches in the country it’s common to find tourists in and around Hikkaduwa.
