The Sigiriya rock

A Sri Lankan tour is sure to be incomplete without Sigiriya in your travel plan. Said to be built around 1600 years ago by King Kashyapa this historic piece of architectural art will involuntarily make you wow at its sight. However, to make your visit a truly enjoyable one you need to be well prepared. The following tips will help you climb Sigiriya like a pro and make it a truly breathtaking experience.

A bit about Sigiriya

The Sigiriya rock – is a place of prestige and pride to all Sri Lankans and a wonder to the world at large. The climb to the top of the Sigiriya Rock is a favourite of many adventurous and travellers – the lion carvings on the way and the fortress at the top contribute generously to its sacred value. All around the year you can see excited tourists and locals making their way to experience the climb of the Sigiriya Rock (also The Lion Rock).

When should you climb Sigiriya?

Sigiriya welcomes visitors all year round but the ideal season is at the dawn of the year. The months January, February and March are most suited for the climb because they are not too hot with only short-lived downpours of rain.

Sigiriya is open for visitors from 7 AM to 5.30PM. So the best time to climb Sigiriya would be early in the morning or late in the evening – avoiding the afternoon heat of the tropical island. (mornings are best for photographs!)

What should you wear to Sigiriya?

Climbing the rock is challenging but not extremely hard. There are many attractions along the way so naturally, you will stop to look at them giving you a much-needed break. Dress simply and comfortably and wear a good pair of walking shoes. Ladies, be sure not to wear skirts and dresses while climbing!

What about water?

Carry as much water as you can. The risk of dehydration is high and so it is also advisable to carry a bottle of sugar water or Jeevani to keep the climb pleasant.

Do I need my mobile?

Of course, you wouldn’t dare attempt the adventure without your fully charged mobile or tablet – but do keep in mind that your devices may lose reception as you climb higher. It is best to prepare to enjoy the climb without depending on mobile connectivity.

What is another important carry item? – notebook.

While cameras are important to capture memories and moments digitally – do carry a notebook to jot down the experience. The rich history and culture spurts from every angle of the rock and believe me Google doesn’t know it all!

Accommodation Near Sigiriya

Last but not least, it is necessary to have a comfortable room to go back to after a tiring climb. So choose a place not too far from the Rock itself – somewhere to stretch your muscles and calm your racing heart. A homestay preferably with free WiFi to cover up for the hours without mobile reception and of course to splash those amazing Sigiriya pictures all over social media.
