It’s wedding season! And with weddings, come honeymoons!
Of course weddings and honeymoons mean costs and money you might not have. While you might break the bank feeding people at your wedding, planning your honeymoon in Sri Lanka can be done at a reasonable and perhaps less costly budget if calculated ahead of time. You can enjoy longer stays in beautiful destinations in our very own island that offers rich culture, nature and beauty and a lot to explore.
There are many honeymoon hideouts in Sri Lanka so let’s narrow it down to a few categories.
Beach Honeymoons
Honeymoon in Sri Lanka beach destinations are many. Southern coast destinations such as Bentota, Induruwa, Dikwella, and Mirissa are few of them. If you plan your honeymoon between the months of November and April, Bentota is a great honeymoon location in Sri Lanka. Did you know that Bentota has the most popular honeymoon beach hotels in Sri Lanka? The beaches are less crowded, Madhu River near Bentota is ideal for a river cruise and beautiful profile pictures. When it comes to accommodation, our villa at Yoho Thotupola Road comes highly recommended.
The east coast is yet another beautiful honeymoon location in Sri Lanka with picturesque cities such as Trincomalee and Pasikudah. Most skip this destination because of distance but Trincomalee is among the quieter beaches also offering the bonus of a scenic sunrise. Uppuveli and Nilaveli beaches in Trincomalee are perfect for romantic walk along the sea. If you are looking for food recommendations, we also have a guide written just for you!
If you are couple living overseas and booked honeymoon packages in Sri Lanka the north western coast should not be missed. Did we mention that Negombo is only 06 kilometres away from the airport? If you want a little more than what Negombo has to offer, Kalpitiya too is a great destination. There are plenty of hotels to fit your budget including Yoho St. Anthoneys Road and the short distance from the airport is always a bonus.
Kalpitiya is a little further away. The city would be ideal for those who want to go on boat rides in the lagoon, sight various birds and reptiles and if you are in season, catch some dolphins!
Nature Honeymoons
For those couples who love nature, the Sinharaja Forest Reserve, Yala National Park and Minneriya National Park are great honeymoon locations in Sri Lanka to consider. Sinharaja has some of the country’s best and even native flowers, plants and animal life.
For the leopard spotters, Yala National Park is the land of leopards and if you are patient enough, you might even spot a few. Yala has many safari rides and beach walks to offer. The best time to visit is between February and July.
Habarana is that location which is always included for honeymoon packages in Sri Lanka as it has has the best of both worlds: nature and privacy. The Minneriya National park is also perfect for safaris and those who adore elephants. Other activities include hot air ballooning that’ll give you a stunning aerial view of the Park and kayaking on Habarana Lake. May to October is a good time for honeymooners!
Hill Country Honeymoons
Hill country honeymoons can be cold and cozy and ideal for those who enjoy cold weather. Kandy, Horton Plains, Bandarawela, Ella, Nuwara Eliya and Hatton are few of the places ideal for honeymooners.
For those travelling to Kandy between months of July and August, we would recommend that you stay at Yoho Mount Rajapihilla Mawatha and not miss out on the Esala Perahera a glorious sight for both local and foreign travellers. Other great Kandy attractions include the Temple of the Tooth and Peradeniya Botanical Gardens.
Nuwara Eliya or “Little England” as we call it, is one of Sri Lanka’s best honeymoon destinations. The city is filled with little country houses and green hills, perfect for cozy romance. For activities you both can take a trip to one of the many plantations while sipping a signature cup of Ceylon tea, play a little golf and even visit the breathtaking waterfalls. Our property Yoho Unique Place is a cozy for newlyweds.
