3 Mindblowing Bawa Buildings to Explore in Sri Lanka 0 151

Sri Lanka is well known for its grand palaces, Buddhist temples and royal cities that are centuries old. However, if you are an admirer of architecture, then apart from visiting these structures, give Geoffrey Bawa’s buildings a visit. He is the country’s most celebrated architects and also remembered as the ‘spiritual father of tropical modernism’. The master architect’s work is spread all across the island, so much so that if ask a local to point the way to a Bawa structure, you’ll be sent off in all directions. We’ve picked out three of Bawa’s beautiful buildings that are worth giving a visit (or staying at) on your Sri Lankan vacation:

The Last House, Tangalle, Sri Lanka

The Last House is the perfect place for an intimate beachside retreat. Located on the Mawella beach, Sri Lanka’s last remaining undeveloped beaches, this six-bedroom Tangalle accommodation is its perfect match; tranquil, relaxed and colourful. The beach house is centred around a swimming pool and is designed in a way that each bedroom provides a clear view of the vast ocean. The tropical décor of the home along with the vibrant colours, add a fun and contemporary element to the property. The property comes well stocked and staffed and can accommodate up to 14 persons.

Gallery Café

The Gallery Café in Colombo is amongst Sri Lanka’s most popular restaurants. Originally designed by Bawa to serve as a doctor’s residence, the property later became the architect’s own accommodation. Under his tutelage, the structure was transformed into the Gallery Café. Today, the café is a popular spot for a delectable meal. The fusion menu reflects Bawa’s signature architecture style that takes inspiration from sources around the world. Contemporary and modern, the ambience of this upmarket restaurant has only seen its popularity boom over the years.

Jetwing Lighthouse, Galle Sri Lanka

This seaside property is the perfect retreat for those looking to stay at a beach resort in Sri Lanka. The property provides exquisite views of the Indian Ocean from the hilltop with interiors that are equally eye-catching. Amongst one of Bawa’s last creations, the 60-room, three-suite property is stylish locale with multiple dining venues, spas, tennis and squash facility, as well as a pool. The hotel also organises excursions including a trip to the heart of the rainforest, Galle Fort and whale watching off the coast!
